Perry Marshall and Glenn Livingston

I just started doing some research on Google Adwords, and I’m thrilled to have found a couple of guys that really know what they are talking about – Perry Marshall and Glenn Livingston. I’m not affiliated with either of them in any way, and I’m not saying that their stuff is right for everybody, but if you’re interested in the topic, check them out.

Does anyone have any other favorite Adwords instructors?

This is a video shot at a seminar I did a while back. I called the “Underground seminar, because it took place in this funky basement meeting room at the Plainfield Public Library. In the video I discuss character description, and share a story about some 4th graders who thought the girl in my example was “hot!” Check it out:

Sales Letter Key: What to Leave Out

Sometimes what you leave out is more important than what you put in. In this article, you’ll discover the one key to determining what should stay and what should go in your sales letter and marketing materials.

Writing sales letters is a delicate balance of telling the reader everything he or she needs to know while still holding his or her interest long enough to make the offer. When it works, you have a fast paced sales letter that relates all of the facts of your offer in a compelling way. When it doesn’t work, you have . . .

What can Stephen King and JK Rowling Teach You About Marketing?

You normally don’t think of top fiction authors as great marketers, but in this article I’ll reveal the secret that Stephen King, JK Rowling and others use to make millions of dollars, and how you can do the same thing.

Author Stephen King has sold more than 350 million horror novels. JK Rowling, creator of the Harry Potter series, recently became the first person ever to reach the $1 billion mark in earnings as a novelist. At first glance it would seem that these are simply two isolated cases of catching “lightning in a bottle.” Each author hit on something – a formula, perhaps – that just happened to catch the public’s fancy, but certainly nothing that we, as marketers, could emulate, right?

I disagree.

In fact, the most valuable marketing lesson I ever received came not from Dan Kennedy, or Ron Popiel, or Matt Bacak, or Mark Joyner, or even Vince, the Sham-Wow guy, or any of the other big name “gurus” in the field. No, the most valuable marketing lesson I ever received came from Stephen King when he said, . . .

New Sources to Inspire Your Sales Letters

As someone that puts together sales letters and marketing materials, I eventually began to build a “swipe file.” That is, a collection of past advertising materials that I can draw from to get a jump start on creating my next piece.

Some of the things in my swipe file are letters that I’ve received from other marketers, advertising everything from children’s books to arthritis cures, or catalog pages with interesting layouts. I also bookmark web sites that have design elements that might be useful to me someday, such as a great color scheme, or a well done order form.

But if the only thing you look at when designing your advertising is other advertising, you are missing out on a huge source of inspiration. What I’m talking about is  . . .
